attempted to enter. They were after a nit wit who had run into the store when he angered them with his remarks about the Civil War. It is said that no man ventured to come into the store in opposition to the muscle and axe helve. Samuel was about 6 feet and 3 inches tall in stocking feet, weight 265 pounds.
He held a commission as Captain of Company G of the 75th Regiment of the National Guards of the State of New York during the Civil War. Mrs. Wm. McKelvey, Waterville, Kansas, a grandniece of Samuel, has a certificate of enlistment issued by Samuel Molby to her father, Asahel Earll.
Samuel's wife "Rillar" was smaller than the average woman.
Samuel was supervisor of the Town of Van Buren, 1851. Fred A Molby of Baldwin, Kansas, has photographs of Samuel, Rillar and of each of their children. Also has the Bible that was Samuel's mother's, and the Bible that was Samuel's. A great grandson of Samuel, Samuel James Molby, III, of Kansas City, Mo., has a beautiful watch with gold face and gold hands, that was Samuel's (1815) watch about 1854.
His farm where his children were born, is the one in Van Buren on the East Dead Creek road where the Lincoln Kratzers now (1953) live. Samuel sold this farm to his 1st cousin, Lyman Maltby, on Sept. 7, 1852. Lyman willed it to his son Herman Maltby. In 1924, the Kratzers bought the farm.

At Hillsdale, Michigan, is a large sandstone monument in Oak Grove cemetery, over the graves of Samuel, his wife and several sons and daughters. Samuel Molby died July 28, 1872, at Hillsdale and his wife d. Sept. 7, 1873, at Hillsdale.
The will of Samuel Molby was probated at Hillsdale. He had purchased a farm 5 miles south from Hillsdale, the deed recorded, March 31, 1864.
